Craftivism

May 2024. Copenhagen DK
Collaboration: Danish Red Cross
‚Craftivism‘ is a form of activism that merges craft with social and political engagement. Using handmade, often textile-based techniques like knitting and sewing, it raises awareness, sparks conversations, and encourages change.

As part of my research, I travelled to Copenhagen to spend a day with Nørklerne, a group of elderly women who transform donated fabric into new clothes for those in need. Their materials come from both fashion brands’ production waste and Red Cross donations, emphasizing the immense amount of textile waste we produce as a society. Every Monday, they gather to sew, knit, and mend—always accompanied by coffee and cake.
